First Moscow State Medical University is the oldest medical school in Russia, located in
Moscow. The university was founded in 1758 as medical faculty of Imperial Moscow University
as the first medical school in Russia. The institution separated from the Moscow State
University and became independent in 1930. The university was renamed after Russian
physiologist, Ivan Sechenov, in 1955. It was known as I.M. Sechenov First Moscow Institute
of Medicine until 1990, and I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy from 1990 to 2010.
The history of further education in preparing foreign citizens for entering a university-
based university begins in the early 1960s. Then the first foreign students were enrolled to
study in the Russian language and the main subjects of medical specialties. Since that time,
a wonderful tradition has begun to assist applicants not only in learning the Russian
language, but also in their adaptation in the new socio-cultural environment. For more than
30 years, the training of foreign citizens in the Russian language and basic subjects for
entering a university (chemistry, biology, physics) took place at the preparatory
department, a structural unit of the university. In 2013, the department of the Russian
language was created at the university for better communication training of foreign
applicants and students.
Since 2015, the functions of recruiting foreign students and organizing their studies in the
programs for preparing for university admission and studying in educational programs at
various levels have been assigned to the University’s Center for International Education.
